The new M5, which is expected to be the first electrified model in the history of the marque, has a prototype that BMW has been observed testing. Sales are anticipated to begin in 2024, or around one year after the revised 5-Series on which it is based. This suggests that a 2025 model will be released. The prototype might appear to be one of the test vehicles for the 5-Series revamp, but there are obvious signs that it is actually the M5 model. There are four exhaust tips, expanded wheel arches, brake rotors the size of a pizza platter, and several intakes in the front fascia. It's interesting to note that the grille appears to be recessed in the hood, a feature first seen on the M3 and M4, and more recently on the 2023 XM. The spider web-like wheel layout resembles that of the M3 and M4, as well. 2025 BMW M5 Spy Shots and Video: Hybrid Powertrain A picture of the interior shows a thick-rimmed steering wheel as well as floating screens for the infotainment system and instrument panel, the latter of which was first used in the iX and is now being gradually incorporated into additional BMW models. The "Electrified Vehicle" stickers, which attest to an electrified powertrain, are also present. The electric V-8 powerplant, which made its debut in the XM, is a safe bet. A prototype's distinctive growl can be heard in a video. The XM's powertrain is a plug-in hybrid system that combines the newest twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 from BMW with an integrated electric motor that is an 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination can produce 735 horsepower in a future XM Red Label variant, which might be used in the M5. The current M5 has a 627 horsepower maximum in CS form. A moderate electric driving range should also be attainable with the plug-in hybrid system. Gets 30 miles on the XM. 2025 BMW M5 Spy Shots and Video: Hybrid Powertrain According to reports, the new M5 will be the first model bearing the marque to offer a second engine option, specifically a battery-electric system. The M5 should be able to keep up with other electric super sedans like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire thanks to this engine, which is supposedly coming with a three-motor system with more than 1,000 horsepower. It's unclear whether the electric M5 will debut concurrently with the hybrid or at a later time if it does. The new 5-Series will be available in an electric variant. Prototypes are already in use for testing, and it will be named an i5.
