Dell Is Developing a Controller for Living Room PC Gaming

Dell's Concept Nyx is a non-commercial home gaming server. It essentially functions as a personal GeForce Now, beaming your games throughout your home. While it is still not for sale, Dell allowed us to test a new controller. Already, it has the potential to be one of the most extensive and comfortable ways to control a PC from the comfort of your couch. The Steam Controller made news when it was released due to its dual haptic touchpads, which Dell is taking into consideration with its new concept controller. It has the same four-button, the two-stick layout you're probably used to, and it even has the same back paddles as high-end controllers like the Dualsense Edge. However, instead of the directional pad, there is a single haptic touchpad with a lot of functionality. Its main purpose is to provide you with a radial menu. The touchpad transforms into a way to navigate a fast access menu of 8 or so PC settings (it's customizable) with the press of a button. It is up to you which PC settings the radial menu accesses, and the aim is to let you set those in the software. Dell is also experimenting with a fingerprint sensor for quick log-ins, and the back paddles can serve as shift buttons to temporarily simply switch the controller to new mapping schemes, which will be determined in software. Sweep your finger across them. When you pick it up, it will recognize you and take you right back into the game you were last playing. I didn't get to play any games with the controller during the demo, but the solid build quality impressed me. We'll see if you can ever get your hands on this controller. Dell's concepts, as demonstrated by Concept UFO, frequently do not leave that phase. However, the gauntlet has been thrown down to anyone who thought the controller form factor was already perfect.
