With the Voice Remote Pro, Amazon's numerous Fire TV Stick models—including the larger and better Amazon Fire TV Cube—offer one of the most immersive and Alexa-friendly user interfaces for connecting to all of your favorite streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. However, just like any multi-purpose web-connected device, you should make sure your Fire TV hardware is running the most recent software. When connected to your home Wi-Fi, this makes sure your Fire TV device operates without a hitch, from navigation to Alexa commands, and is as hack-proof as possible. Thankfully, the majority of Fire TV devices will automatically update, but if you want to manually download the most recent software or find out which version your Fire TV equipment is running, we've created this step-by-step guide to show you how. How to upgrade your Fire TV Cube or Stick?

You can manually update your Fire TV device in addition to having it set up to automatically download and install software updates. Here's how to use the most recent Fire TV operating system to search for and install an update.
  • On the Home screen, tap the Settings icon (the shape of a gear) located in the top-right corner of the display.
  • Select My Fire TV, then select About, from the list of available settings.
  • To see if there are any updates that can be downloaded, select either Install update (if one needs to be installed) or Check for updates.
  • Refrain from unplugging your Fire TV device once the update has started. Your Fire TV device will automatically restart when the update is complete.

Updating a Fire TV device with an old operating system

You may still be able to download and install software updates even if the hardware on your Fire TV device is running an older version of Fire OS with a different look and feel. This depends on how old your Fire TV device is.
  • On the home screen, select Settings from the menu that appears on the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Select My Fire TV, then select About from the list of choices.
  • Just like with the most recent Fire OS, you have the choice of installing an update or checking for them. Choose an option, and if your Fire TV is downloading and installing new software, keep it plugged in.
