According to ICE sources who spoke to The Post on Monday, the man suspected of swinging a hammer at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was in the country illegally.

Sources claim that David DePape, who was charged with federal and municipal crimes for the brutal assault on 82-year-old Paul Pelosi on Monday, was in the country unlawfully because he overstayed his visa.

Sources cited the suspect’s legitimate Social Security number, which can only be obtained with a job, as proof that he was in the US as early as 2001. The 42-year-old suspect was born in Canada in 1980.

According to sources, the Social Security number was obtained in Hawaii. It is still unknown how long DePape remained in the nation after his visa expired.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against DePape for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and other offenses. He was also accused of attempted kidnapping and violence on a federal level.

In what San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins described as a politically motivated attack, he allegedly broke into Nancy Pelosi’s home in an attempt to locate the House speaker, but only her husband was there.

Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, DC, at the time of the incident.

“Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers and warm wishes. We are most grateful,” the Democrat said in a statement Monday.
