AI is a serious threat to the planet, but there are solutions too: Researchers

News at a glance:
  • Oxford researchers fear that super-powerful artificial intelligence might wipe off humans.
  • According to experts, even basic AI might cause problems for individuals.
  • One method of controlling AI might be to ensure that it is appropriately governed.
Experts warn that Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be a grave threat to the world, but there are ways to counter it. Oxford University scientists recently warned that "superhuman AI" could be as harmful as nuclear weapons. The discussions are part of the growing concern over the potential dangers of AI, Kevin Gordon, NexOptic's vice president of AI Technologies, told Lifewire in an email interview. There's no need to imagine Terminator-style scenarios, as boring as AI that assists legal or regulatory processes that eventually lead the law in unfavorable ways, or AI designed to maximize user engagement on social media platforms. Can AI take command over humanity?

During a presentation before a UK science and technology committee, Michael Cohen, an Oxford doctoral student, gave a bleak outlook for AI, warning that advanced AI could wipe out the human race. In an email interview, Selmer Bringsjord, the director of the AI and Reasoning Lab at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, whose research is focused on AI's mathematical and philosophical foundations, said that AI does not have to be superhuman to be dangerous. Bringsjord used the hypothetical case of a nuclear bomb that functions more like a mine to illustrate his point. The device is located under the soil and will detonate only if the temperature of the soil reaches 2 degrees Celsius. "In AI language, this artificial agent can sense the temperature around it and as a result can perform one of two actions, detonate or remain dormant," Bringsjord said. "This AI is complex enough to cause a problem for humanity, but it is intellectually dim."

One method for avoiding an AI disaster is:

Bringsjord said he's in favor of this approach as a way to prevent an AI disaster. "Even the raw material that is handy for making a nuclear bomb is regulated," he said. "Reasonable, technologized governments must regulate AI and the "raw material" that can be used to engineer supremely dangerous AI. Bringsjord cited, as an example of a form of AI that should be regulated, popular language models like ChatGPT. By definition, the actions of such AI cannot be formally proven correct just by looking at their origins. "It's okay for a funny chat, but not a powerful and autonomous AI." The threat of AI is exaggerated

Christopher White, the president of NEC Laboratories America, a technology research laboratory, suggested in an email that AI could be compared to a calculator. It can perform calculations faster than humans, but it is not a tool that would be considered dangerous or regulated, he added. "It is only natural that we would strive to develop thinking tools that enhance our ability to think and solve problems." White pointed out that AI systems are only "superhuman" for certain and limited tasks. "Despite our astonishing advances in AI, we don't yet have the resources or technology to create an all-purpose thinking machine that can outperform humans in more than a few dimensions," he said.
