Amazon Is Ending Multiple Ventures to Control Costs

Amazon is canceling many of its ventures, with the most recent ones being a high-performance robotic system and a digital travel experience. Additionally, this follows this month's pronouncements by Amazon that it would cease testing delivery robots, halt making a children's video device, and stop hiring for its corporate retail section. The company also announced earlier this year ending its Amazon Care, a venture into health care. Furthermore, Amazon also confirmed it is discontinuing Explore, a virtual reality trip experience, and Glow, a video device designed to help kids connect with family. However, the company made no comments about Aqua, an Amazon Web Services, nor did it confirm or deny that it was terminating the two robotics projects Canvas and Orca. Amazon Moreover, a post on Blind, an anonymous message board where IT workers discuss job interviews, layoffs, and workplace rumors, identified a half-dozen ventures that were ending, as well as the possibility of Aqua ending. The article claimed to be an updated thread about "project shutdown."

What did Amazon say about ending several ventures?

Amazon's representative, Brad Glasser, told The Seattle Times, "At Amazon, we think big, experiment, and invest in new ideas to delight customers. We also continually evaluate the progress and potential of our products and services to deliver customer value, and we regularly make adjustments based on those assessments." Amazon And although Amazon declined to reveal the number of employees impacted by the ending of the ventures, it did say that some staff might shift to different parts of the company.

The reason for the termination of ventures

Due to the pressure on the economy caused by the surge in demand for its services during the COVID-19 epidemic, Amazon decided to pause its expansion this year, similar to many other digital companies. Amazon The company has already slowed down or abandoned plans to increase the size of its warehouses, including a proposed new fulfillment facility in Rainier Valley, Seattle. Additionally, top Amazon executives indicated earlier that the company will prioritize cost management and adopt a more focused hiring strategy. It will also put a halt to the building of new office buildings in Bellevue, which will house the majority of its future Puget Sound expansion. On another note, earlier this month, Amazon disclosed it would halt hiring for its corporate retail sector, which encompasses both online and offline stores, its marketplace for independent vendors, and the Amazon Prime subscription service. Amazon Furthermore, the company anticipates starting new hires for that division next year. However, a spokesperson declined to comment on how the temporary shutdown might affect the company's offices near Puget Sound or its Seattle headquarters. Amazon Glasser stated, "Amazon continues to have a significant number of open roles available across the company. We have many different businesses at various stages of evolution, and we expect to keep adjusting our hiring strategies in each of these businesses at various junctures."

Other companies' decision on hiring

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, announced in July that it would decelerate hiring for the remainder of the year. In that same month, Microsoft made several job cuts, including those in its Azure cloud services and security software division. Additionally, Facebook's parent company, Meta, announced last month that it was cutting its employee count for the first time ever. Amazon On the other hand, Amazon announced earlier this month that Scout, an autonomous personal delivery vehicle that had been scooting around Kirkland to leave small gifts for residents, is ceasing field tests. According to spokesperson Alisa Carroll, Amazon is "reorienting the program" after realizing that some aspects of the service "weren't meeting customers' needs." However, a Tuesday update on Blind revealed that Amazon may now be completely terminating the initiative.
