Apple Is Reportedly Creating Micro LED Screens For 2024 With Big Goals But Tiny LEDs

This week, we discovered that Apple is attempting to produce its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, and today, according to Bloomberg, the company is also working to create display panels rather than relying on third parties like Samsung and LG. The story is similar to one from 2018, which suggested that Apple could start switching to its own displays in 2020, however, the one from today claims that Apple was unable to move forward with those plans due to "expensive expenses and technological obstacles." Apple purchased Micro LED technology in 2014, which will be used in the new panels. Micro LED displays, like OLED panels, provide pixel-level brightness settings that enable improved contrast and lower energy use. Additionally, because they don't need a separate backlight layer, they can be thinner than LCD screens. However, Micro LED screens differ from OLED screens in that they do not rely on organic material that can degrade over time, they have a higher maximum brightness, and they are not susceptible to burn-in problems like OLED screens can be. Before developing versions for iPhones, its future mixed-reality headset, and other devices, it intends to first sell them in "the highest-end Apple Watches," such as the Apple Watch Ultra. As per usual, the article attributes the transition to Apple's aim to maintain complete control over the design of all of its products and the supply chain. The article claims that even while the panels would be created especially for Apple and adhere to its standards, Apple would still rely on an unidentified "outside supplier" to produce the screens. Only "test production" of the screens is done at the company's facilities, which are located in Santa Clara, California, and Taipei, Taiwan.
