Apple Will Use Made-In-America Chips in Its Iphones and Macs

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has acknowledged that the tech company has signed a contract to purchase "made in America" chips for its iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers. According to CNBC, the chips would be produced at a new Arizona plant owned and run by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which already manufactures chips for numerous Apple products. President Joe Biden was present when Cook made the revelation on Tuesday at a gathering in the Grand Canyon State. Cook praised the achievement as a "extremely meaningful moment," saying, "Thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips can proudly stamp Made in America." "Today is merely the beginning," the Apple CEO concluded. Today, we're fusing the know-how of TSMC with the unmatched inventiveness of American labor. Two factories in Arizona will get $40 billion in investment from TSMC, with the first one in Phoenix set to open in 2024 and the second one following two years later. The CHIPS and Science Act, which promotes domestic semiconductor production, is used by the US government to partially fund the initiative. According to CNBC, many in the tech sector worry that a Chinese attempt to invade Taiwan in order to impose its "One China" policy will seriously affect Taiwan's ability to continue an uninterrupted supply of the component to the global market. The Asian island is a giant when it comes to chip manufacturing. Strict zero-COVID regulations have also affected Chinese tech production facilities, which has led Apple to notify customers that this holiday season's wait times for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices will be longer than anticipated. Even though TSMC's U.S. factory will only produce a small portion of the manufacturer's overall output, the 600,000 wafers it plans to produce annually should be adequate to satisfy domestic demand. American computer giant Intel is also constructing factories in Ohio and Arizona as part of a similar effort to enhance chip production on American soil. The business hopes to sign Apple as a client.
