Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite alerts rescuers

Apple's new "Emergency SOS" service, which allows off-grid iPhone users to call for help via satellite, may have resulted in the company's first successful rescue operation. Two people were in a car traveling through the Angeles National Forest when their car went off the road and "off the side of a hill". The impact was severe enough to tear the front bumper of the car, which appears to have then slid into a narrow valley below. Users can use the service by pointing their mobile at a passing satellite, and when a connection is made, their location is sent along with any instances, such as when someone is injured. "The call center provided us with accurate latitude and longitude for the victims," the rescue team wrote. "Rescue 5 was able to find the victims and drop a paramedic. The paramedic discovered that the patients, a male, and a female in their twenties, had minor to moderate injuries. The helicopter hoisted the victims out of the canyon and transported them to a nearby hospital." Apple's service is just one of several ways people may be able to use satellites directly from their phones in the near future. Lynk assures a regular exchange of data for Text messaging and emergency alert purposes, and T-Mobile is collaborating with Starlink to make something similar available to subscribers.
