Are EVs Fair for Everyone? Surprising Lack of Research Raises Questions

EVs are a leading example of a progressive approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the negative effects of climate change by utilizing the power of rechargeable batteries or advanced fuel cell technology. The necessity for an in-depth investigation into the equality elements of EVs has been highlighted by a recent study by Penn State academics. Surprisingly few studies have looked at how the benefits of EVs are distributed fairly or whether particular groups or regions may be disproportionately impacted. Are EVs equitable for all users?

Only 48 publications out of a massive collection of 9,838 studies specifically addressed equality in regard to EVs, highlighting the critical need for more in-depth research in this area. "We highlighted in our paper what we saw as the most understudied: making equity more explicit as research and, second, we saw a need to focus on those emerging markets and parts of the developing world where EVs are going to be more important," said Wei Peng, assistant professor of international affairs and civil and environmental engineering. EVs don't release carbon or other toxic gases when they're operating, yet there are still unintended negative economic and ecological effects. The research team claims that the electricity required to charge EVs is frequently produced by power plants, often located far from the real usage locations, that may use carbon-producing technologies. Additionally, the manufacture of EVs requires mining and manufacturing processes that include complex worldwide supply chains, raising concerns about the export of emissions and negative consequences to other countries. The identification of populations that might be particularly impacted by these factors was stressed by the researchers. Location, demography, and levels of air pollution exposure should all be taken into account. In contrast to places with a bigger young population, areas with a higher concentration of older people may be more vulnerable to the health effects of air pollution. Equity Effects of Technological Advances

This study emphasizes the significance of carefully assessing the equity consequences of technical breakthroughs, even if cleantech solutions are frequently perceived as universally advantageous. The complexity of the problem was highlighted by Anna Lee, an undergraduate geoscience student, who said, "Equity is definitely a complex issue that involves better understanding the complex intersections between the transport of power and the manufacturing sector and how these equity implications can greatly differ depending on the geographical location, spatial scale, and other social demographic factors." First, additional study is required to evaluate the effects of pollution and health on a fine spatial scale, going beyond just counting emissions. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific activities and implications throughout the full value chain of EVs, it is crucial to understand the interactions between the manufacturing, power, and transportation sectors. The study serves as a reminder that while EVs show great potential for a sustainable future, it is crucial to have a comprehensive and equitable strategy to make sure that the advantages are available and equitable for all.
