Once upon a time, it may have been believed that smartphones with built-in hinges would quickly give way to gadgets like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 in favor of phablets and tablets that can transform into smartphones without the need for a hinge. However, the most recent industry leaks claim that rollable won't actually overtake foldable in the near future since OEMs are having trouble addressing some of the more serious manufacturing and durability issues raised by the more recent form factor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series of smartphones, which although having the benefit of expandable screen space, nonetheless required users to carry around what would be the equivalent of a double-thick smartphone when closed, may have given rise to hopes that OPPO would soon release a competitive alternative.
But as we all know, OPPO finally caved and unveiled the Find N foldable in its place, followed by the second-generation N2. Now, the renowned leaker Digital Chat Station has reportedly made some compelling arguments regarding why this occurred and why rollables haven't yet supplanted premium personal devices as the newest form factor.
According to OEMs like LG, the primary flaw in the average
rollable is its special mechanical alternative to folding and unfolding. Making a flexible display extendable would make it less durable and long-lasting overall, which makes logical given that it might be in motion more frequently.

Rollables are also far less water- and dust-resistant than foldables, not to mention traditional smartphones, due to their frames and moving parts.
The equivalent of the dreaded crease for contemporary foldables, their considerably more fragile screens may simply be at more risk of warping or even tearing with increased rolling cycles. Thus, some businesses may advocate combining folding and rolling into one process.
