The enormous Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which collapsed in late 2020, won't be rebuilt by the National Science Foundation (NSF). According to an NSF release, the organization is planning to erect a learning facility that will concentrate on STEM teaching and outreach. In movies like GoldenEye and Contact, the Arecibo Observatory is portrayed as a crucial tool for deep space exploration. Auxiliary cables did fail in August and November of 2020, though, with one falling in August.  The Arecibo Observatory telescope won't be rebuilt by the National Science Foundation In order to protect Arecibo, the NSF said that it intended to dismantle the observatory out of concern that others would have followed.
