James Cameron, the director of Avatar: The Way of Water, has admitted that the upcoming sequel will need to be the "third or fourth highest-grossing film in history" to break even. Cameron recently told GQ that The Way of Water was terrific expensive to make, though he did not provide an actual figure to support or refute claims that the production cost was around $250 million. He did, however, call the film "the worst business case in movie history," before disclosing that the long-awaited sequel would need to outrank in global box office charts just to break even. The film is currently ranked fourth with $2.9 billion, trailing Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. It will ultimately decide whether the fourth and fifth Avatar films are made. The sequel to James Cameron's Avatar, The Way of Water, is set to be released in December. Avatar 3 will be released in 2024, and Avatar 4 will be released on December 25, 2026.
