At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Bird Buddy is showcasing its new AI-powered Smart Hummingbird Feeder. Motion activates the feeder's camera, prompting it to snap photographs of the bird. These photos are then fed into an AI programme, which helps identify the species and alerts the user via the app. It was initially funded on Kickstarter, and then 250 test cameras were built and distributed to volunteer backers. A group of ornithologists and interns manually processed more than 2 million photos to train its artificial intelligence for bird identification. Bird Buddy also includes a well-designed mobile app that makes bird-watching fun. Users can build their bird collection in the app, track birds' visits over time, know about their habits, and share bird pictures with the society, giving a modern twist to what is often considered of as an older person's hobby. A new Heartbeat Map website, also debuting at CES, allows people outside of Bird Buddy's customer base to track real-time bird sightings. The company demonstrated its new Hummingbird Feeder at CES, noting that it intends to design the feeder with recyclable and sustainable materials while also offering unique hummingbird-friendly features such as ports with a lily-shaped red flower that allows access to the nectar the birds will eat. The two-part design snaps together with a seal to prevent mould and leaks, but it can be easily unsnapped for cleaning. The new feeder, like the original Bird Buddy smart feeder, has a swappable camera module. The original feeder costs $199 or $269 with a solar roof and has been available since September. The price of the Hummingbird Feeder has not yet been determined, but it is expected to be comparable or slightly less. The new feeder is expected to be available later this year, according to the company. According to him, the company intends to open source this data so that organisations such as the Audubon Society and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, as well as universities, can access it. The team has also discussed the possibility of letting users to photograph and identify birds using only their phones. In addition to Kickstarter funds, the Slovenia- and Kalamazoo, Michigan-based startup raised $8.5 million in a seed round last year from General Catalyst and Backed.
