Brendan Fraser is up for a Golden Globe for his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky's new film "The Whale," which had its world premiere in September at the Venice International Film Festival, but he won't be there at the ceremony on Jan. 10. The 54-year-old has promised to abstain from the awards show put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) because he believes that Philip Berk, the organization's former president, sexually assaulted him. However, the 89-year-old Berk has vehemently refuted the claims. Furthermore, Fraser adamantly said that he will "not participate" in a Golden Globes show in an interview with GQ last month, stating, "I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association." He continued, "It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”

More details about Fraser's sexual assault claim

According to the actor, "His [Berk’s] left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around. I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.” Following the encounter, Fraser stated that he "became depressed," adding, "I was blaming myself and I was miserable — because I was saying, ‘This is nothing; this guy reached around and he copped a feel.’ “ Moreover, at the time of the alleged assault, Fraser kept quiet, but his representatives petitioned the HFPA for a written apology, which they later received from Berk. In 2018, Berk spoke to GQ about his apology, saying, "My apology admitted no wrongdoing, the usual ‘If I’ve done anything that upset Mr. Fraser, it was not intended and I apologize.’ In addition, he said that Fraser’s version of events was “a complete fabrication.” The same year, the HFPA launched an investigation, and it found that although "Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance."
