Quick summary:
  • Google promises to accelerate new AI initiatives, according to the Times.
  • Google plans to reveal at least 20 new products this year and launch a chatbot-enabled version of its search engine at some point.
  • The explosion of chatbots on the scene is very alarming.
The New York Times reported on Friday that Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin had several emergency meetings with company executives about OpenAI's new chatbot, which Google believes could threaten its $149 billion search business. The large language model (LLM), known as ChatGPT, was created by OpenAI and released in late November 2022. Its conversational capabilities to answer questions, generate text in many styles, aid with programming, and more stunned the world. Google is now scrambling to catch up, with CEO Sundar Pichai issuing a “code red” to encourage new AI development. Also Read: How To Use ChatGPT? AI Chatbot That has Taken The World Unlike Google, which relies primarily on keywords, ChatGPT uses natural language processing to understand the context of what a user is asking and then produce the best possible answer. Although ChatGPT's output is not always accurate, its performance is persuasive enough to demonstrate a conversational search interface that would make Google look old. Microsoft is reportedly working on a new version of its Bing search engine that will incorporate ChatGPT features. Since leaving their daily roles at Google in 2019, Page and Brin have not been in the spotlight as much with the search engine, but they have long advocated integrating AI into Google's products, a fact that reflects the enormity of the ChatGPT challenge. According to the NYT, Google has responded to OpenAI by introducing fast-track product approvals and tools to help other companies build their own AI prototypes. Google also provides image-creation technology to software developers and other businesses along with its LaMDA AI language model. Some have wondered if Google has been playing it too safe, concerned about the negative societal impacts or copyright implications of generative AI technology. Bottom line: China, India, and the USA lead the field in AI, followed by Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. While Google delays, the smaller OpenAI is releasing generative AI products that could disrupt not only Google but the entire technology industry as OpenAI works toward its goal of creating ever-more powerful AI technology. Google's response to this existential threat could determine its long-term success.
