One of the most significant jobs for Sony and Microsoft in 2023 will be to complete that. There will be a lot more PS5 and Xbox Series X/S exclusives this year, especially from first-party studios. This year, a number of titles, including Forspoken, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Forza Motorsport, and Starfield, will serve as examples of how a console game from the ninth generation looks and feels. This means that the biggest releases this year have a lot riding on them to show that the games industry hasn't plateaued. A steadily paced beginning Given that we're still seeing popular titles debut on older platforms, it's hard to think we've been using this current console generation for more than two years. In order to give the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S more of a distinct character, more games are expected to be released specifically for those platforms this year, which suggests that this trend will alter. However, that has taken longer than the eighth generation of gaming systems, the PS4 and Xbox One. This was true despite all of the console's flaws at the time of release. They accomplished this using Xbox One add-ons like SmartGlass and Kinect, as well as visually stunning graphics at the time. Because early-generation titles like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 were purposely cross-gen, we haven't seen it as often with the Xbox Series X/S, and some of its more ambitious exclusives have experienced delays. On the PlayStation side, the PS4's exclusives launch took place over a period of several years. But ultimately, games like Bloodborne, Driveclub, and Infamous Second Son won over players, and by 2017, amazing exclusives were routinely released throughout each year. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, and The Last of Us Part 1 are demonstrating the PS5's capabilities, while Astro's Playroom continues to be a superb PS5 and DualSense display. However, the two largest PlayStation Studios titles from the previous year, God of War: Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West, were released on the PS4 and hence still had a "last-gen" feel to them. One can't help but wonder what both games would have accomplished if they had just been released on the PS5. Over the course of the upcoming year, I want to hear a more definitive response to that issue. Forspoken might start off with some spectacular visual effects, but Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is in a far more significant situation. It will be a PS4-era hit's first sequel that isn't connected to the console. Spider-Man: Remastered and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales are already improved when played on the PS5 thanks to the PS5's high frame rate and adaptive triggers. I'm curious to see how Insomniac Games can improve the aesthetics, expand the areas of New York City that can be explored, and expand the Spider-ability Men's to swing around on the PS5. Hopefully, any further PS5 exclusive releases this year will follow in the same footsteps. Xbox Game Studios, on the other hand, needs stability this year in the form of a continuous supply of exclusives that will increase the perceived value of its new consoles and, in turn, Xbox Game Pass. Forza Motorsport's upcoming soft reboot, which will debut this spring, is one game that will be essential in doing this. For casual players, Forza may not be the most thrilling franchise, but when it releases, it could have the best graphics of the current generation. Forza Motorsport will be a crucial release to show us just what the Xbox Series X/S is capable of because racing titles are frequently excellent technical showcases for video game systems. Even while Starfield's visuals aren't completely stunning, its tremendous scope should still be noticeable on the next-generation hardware. Hopefully, a good frame rate and quick load times will show that the nearly eight-year, cross-generational wait for Starfield was worthwhile. While there are many excellent games available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, few of them have demonstrated the full potential of their respective platforms, lessening the sense of exclusivity for each one. Now, 2023 needs to be a pivotal year for this console generation since gamers will require an increase in the number of games to justify upgrading their consoles by $300 to $500. The ninth generation of gaming consoles should finally seem like it is in full swing this year when we start seeing exclusive Xbox Series X/S and PS5 games from Microsoft and Sony regularly, respectively.
