California Stoves And Pipes Leak Cancer-Causing Gas

Researchers have discovered that gas stoves in California homes are leaking cancer-causing benzene, while they note that additional research is required to determine the number of households with leaks. According to the study, which was published on Thursday in Environmental Science and Technology, over 4 tonnes of benzene per year are estimated to leak into the atmosphere from outdoor pipes that transport the gas to buildings throughout California. This amount is equal to the benzene emissions from close to 60,000 vehicles. And the state does not account for those emissions. In order to determine what types of gases were being released into homes when stoves were turned off, the researchers collected samples of gas from 159 residences in various Californian locations. They discovered that dangerous air pollutants like benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), which can all have negative health impacts in humans with chronic exposure or acute exposure in greater concentrations, were present in all of the samples they analyzed. California Stoves And Pipes Leak Cancer-Causing Gas The National Cancer Institute lists benzene as a recognized carcinogen that has been linked to leukemia, other cancers, and blood abnormalities. This is the substance that the researchers were most concerned about. Given that California uses the second-highest amount of residential natural gas in the country, the finding may have significant effects on both the interior and outdoor air quality in that state. The gas that is piped into people's homes in California exposes them to benzene at amounts that could be deadly, according to paper co-author and senior scientist Drew Michanowicz of PSE Healthy Energy, a center for energy research and policy. To guarantee that present and future policies are health-protective in light of this new research, we hope that policymakers would take this data into account when they are making decisions. Nearly all of the study's regions—Greater Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Fresno—had homes with benzene levels that were much higher than the amount deemed acceptable by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazards Assessment. But the North San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys have by far the greatest benzene concentrations. California Stoves And Pipes Leak Cancer-Causing Gas Residents and healthcare professionals in the area who spoke to The Associated Press about the study weren't particularly surprised by this discovery. This is due to the fact that many of them were affected by Aliso Canyon, which in 2015 saw the greatest known natural gas leak in the country. 100,000 tonnes of methane and other pollutants, including benzene, escaped from a Southern California Gas Co.-operated well back then. The leak caused headaches, nausea, and nose bleeds and took almost four months to stop. There is no safe threshold of benzene, the World Health Organization has stated. That was acute exposure to a significant amount of the chemical, which is distinct from chronic exposure to smaller levels.
