"Candid Stories" is a new Instagram clone that recreates BeReal's signature once-a-day selfies. The feature will be tested in South Africa to start. BeReal, which originally launched in 2019, has gained a steady following among teens and Gen Z users.
Users will only be able to see their friends' Candids once they have uploaded their own. Candid selfies will snap a photo with both a device's front and rear-facing cameras simultaneously. Meta has been working on a version of Candid since at least this summer.

The photo-sharing app is also trying out a new "Notes" feature, which allows users to add a 60-character status update to their profile in Instagram's inbox. Some have recommended that Notes could help the business compete with Twitter at a time when many people are looking for alternatives.

Instagram has not yet reacted to BeReal's popularity, but it appears likely that the photo-editing app will do so shortly. When Snapchat's Stories became famous, Instagram launched its own Stories feature. Reels are an obvious response to TikTok's popularity; YouTube Shorts is another obvious attempt to capitalize on vertically shot short-form video.
