China’s CATL Company Launches ShanXing: World’s Superfast Car Charging Battery

image credit - prnewswire.com CATL, a Chinese company that makes a lot of batteries and supplies Tesla, has come out with a new battery called "Shenxing" that can be charged very quickly and give 400 km of range in just 10 minutes. It is the first Li-ion battery in the world that can be charged at a rate of 4C (C-rate). C-rate is a way to measure how fast a battery can be charged or drained. If the C-rate is higher, the rate at which charge goes into or out of the battery is faster. It has limits because of how the battery works and how it is built. 

What Are Innovations In CATL Battery?

CATL's chief technology officer Gao Huan said that new battery materials and electrode structures made the rapid charging speed possible. CATL has talked about how it can make this battery. It has changed (replaced) the following things about the battery:  Cathode electrode with nano-crystal LFP cathode covered by a super electronic network to speed up the Li-ion extraction from the cathode. The anode is usually made of several layers of graphite that store (intercalate) incoming charges while the battery is charging. CATL's newest second-generation fast ion ring technology can change graphite's surface qualities. This increases the number of intercalation pathways and shortens the distance between where lithium ions can intercalate, making a fast way for current to flow. Also, a multi-gradient layered electrode design has been made to find the right balance between charging quickly and having a long range. Conventional electrolyte has been replaced by a new formula for superconducting electrolyte, which makes the electrolyte less thick and increases its ability to carry electricity. The range of CATL's battery is 700 km on a single charge, and it only takes 10 minutes to charge for 400 km. Even at -10°C, where a standard battery takes hours to charge, the battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in 30 minutes.

Production and OEMs reactions

The company's CTO says that mass production of batteries will start by the end of the year, and new EVs with fast-charging batteries will be ready in the first quarter of 2024. 

Safety of Battery

By using smart algorithms to control the world temperature field inside the cells, CATL has built a real-time fault testing system that can solve the problems caused by fast refueling. This gives the Shenxing battery a high level of safety. The company says that up to 6,800 checks are used in the production line to ensure no problems with the batteries.  Chinese car businesses like Chery Automobile, Changan Auto, GAC Group, and Great Wall Motors have called this battery innovative and expressed interest in this CATL product.
