Coalinga - A City in California Is Running Out of Water

Water will run out in Coalinga, California before this year is through. The only source of water for the city is an aqueduct that is under federal administration. And according to the Washington Post, authorities predict that the water will run out by the end of 2022. As a result, authorities in the area are looking for alternatives. The reason is that if their supply runs low, politicians in Coalinga will have to purchase water on the open market. And according to Fox 26 News, it's astronomically expensive and might limit Coalinga's ability to offer people other services. And this is why - at the current price of water on that market, which is up to $2,500 per acre-foot, or 326,000 gallons, getting the required amount would cost the city millions of dollars. Adam Adkisson, a member of the Coalinga municipal council, told the local TV station that "our citizens cannot afford a thousand dollar or a thousand percent increase on their water bills."

Coalinga's water issue worsens

Coalinga has experienced water constraints in the past, and this year is no exception. According to Adkisson, the city has been subject to some kind of water restriction since 2014. According to ABC 30, Coalinga received a water allocation from the Central Valley Project in 2017 that was around 10,000 acre-feet, but that amount decreased to 2,000 acre-feet. In addition, the city's water resources website currently promotes "high conservation," and residents are only permitted to water outdoor plants one day per week. Also, the city doesn't allow watering between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Moreover, the severity of Coalinga's water situation has become apparent in startling ways. For instance, this past August, the local fire chief tested the fire hydrants, and one of them ejected a block of compacted dry soil, while another ejected a can of Axe body spray, according to a report in the Washington Post. California's struggles with water

California's low-income communities struggle to pay their water bills. According to a 2020 study by the California State Water Resources Control Board, water bills grew by nearly 45% between 2007 and 2015, which is faster than the rate of inflation. Furthermore, throughout the state year, California officials promoted various programs to reduce water loss and encourage residents to reduce their own water usage. Consequently, the average Los Angeles resident was able to reduce their water consumption by roughly 10% in June. Coalinga Out of Water Besides, it comes as no surprise that California is having water problems after an abnormally dry winter. Additionally, less snowmelt meant less water entering the state's reservoirs and streams.  Lastly, the Western states of the United States are often drier than other sections of the nation. However, heat waves accompanied this year's extremely dry weather in California and the nearby states, worsening the arid conditions even more. Besides, climate change has raised the possibility of hotter and dryer conditions worldwide but particularly in places like California where it is difficult to manage water levels.
