Coalinga is a valley city in California located between San Francisco and Los Angeles is facing a drought and as per the city officials, it will completely run out of water by December 1st. Pro-Tem Mayor Ray Singleton who has been a resident since 2000 and is raising his family here stated, “It was beautifully green just eight years ago. If you look at Google Maps, my yard was green, but like maybe five or six years ago you look at it now, it’s like the Sahara Desert,”  Yearly, Coalinga is given 10,000-acre feet of water but this year has been allocated only 2000 acre-feet of water which is exhausted with the city sheltering 17,465 people. According to the Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this is the second year in a row facing a drought in 128 years. The valley city residents are already having restrictions on watering the lawn, car washing, and prohibition on pools. The resident will have to sign an agreement stating that they will provide 30,000 gallons of water if they wish to maintain a pool. Coalinga, California Water To Runout By December 1st Singleton is worried about the fire department flushing out hydrants soon which consumes a lot of water. The city has a mental hospital and prison and the government has no control over how they use water according to Singleton, they take up around 25% to 30% of the supply. The Pleasant Valley State Prison stated that they have reduced water usage from 2020 to almost 21% with pressurized water for cleaning, reduced treatment facility of water, irrigation of landscaping, etc. Singleton has tried buying water from the market but is priced very high he states that the state will have to hike taxes but he is also hopeful of getting a grant. He stated, “Sacramento, it’s beautiful up there. I mean, it’s like, wow, we would love to have some of the water that you have. It’s crazy that we don’t.” The Bureau of Reclamation stated that the drought is affecting many sections and is working closely with Coalinga to find a solution. It stated that the funding can be made available through Urban Community Drought Relief grant. Coalinga, California Water To Runout By December 1st The Bureau of Reclamation stated, “provide immediate assistance for whatever level of funding is needed to support the purchase of water for the city’s needs.” “Coalinga historically uses 7,125-acre-feet of water in the wettest years but in this third consecutive year of severe drought, they delivered 2,800-acre-feet of water to Coalinga.” The farmland has turned from trees to solar panels which Singleton implies that water allocation has to do with the economy. He questions, “Are we in a drought, or are WE in a drought?” “Because the state seems to be looking great around us and we’re looking brown on the inside.”
