Consumers Prefer RTX 4090 Over 4080 Leaving Behind Retailers With Lots Of Cards

On November 16, GeForce RTX 4080 went on sale for US$1,199 MSRP. According to the most recent revelation from hardware leaker Tom of the Moore's Law Is Dead, the high price may be deterring consumers. According to a YouTube channel, several merchants have the RTX 4080 on hand, unlike with past GPU releases. The launch supply of the GeForce RTX 4080 may be half that of the RTX 4090, according to a story we published last week. It was sensible to assume that the RTX 4080 GPUs would sell out quickly on release day and that eBay scalpers would list the board there for exorbitant rates based on such reports and previous GPU releases. Although the scalped RTX 4080 cards were put up for sale at exorbitant prices, it seems the GPU isn't being received as well as anticipated. nvidia-shelves-the-12gb-rtx-4080-graphics-card According to Moore's Law Is Dead, big retailers both inside and outside the US are having problems shifting RTX 4080 devices. One MLID source claims that the merchant received 90 RTX 4080 cards at launch, but that on November 18 it still had half of them in stock. According to the same source, the 150 RTX 4090 GPUs they received for launch were sold out in under 24 hours. A similar tale is told in another source. Less than 40 RTX 4080 cards were sold by the retailer, who likely received a total of 120 for the launch day. Comparatively, the merchant had 200 RTX 4090s in stock for the first day of sales, and they were all sold out on that day. Some of their clients were heard saying, "4080 sucks; let me know when you have a 4090." In other words, if these allegations from MLID are true in any significant way, customers are essentially avoiding the GPU. Although the RTX 4080 is considerably quicker than the RTX 3080 and even the RTX 3090 Ti, in our opinion, the US$1,200 price tag will put off many people. Additionally, AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which will launch in less than a month and offer performance that appears to be on par with the RTX 4080 at a far lower cost, will be available. Customers looking for an RTX 4080-class board might therefore be waiting to see how Team Red's RDNA 3 offers compared to Team Green's.
