Create Your Pokémon-Like Creature Using AI

After nine generations of Pokémon, it can feel as if the game developers are just pulling words out of a hat and seeing what they come up with. Klefki, the sentient keyring Pokémon, is still a source of astonishment for me. There is now an AI generator for that. Justin Pinkney, a Lambda Labs machine learning researcher, developed a "text to Pokémon" generator by fine-tuning Stable Diffusion, an AI image generator that works similarly to DALL-E 2. Pinkney trained the AI model on Pokémon descriptions, such as Bulbasaur being "a drawing of a green pokemon with red eyes," and Caterpie being "a green and yellow toy with a red nose." Pokémon Pinkney explained on Twitter that once the model is fine-tuned, it will always generate images in that style. That means cartoonish pocket monsters in this case. To use the generator, simply connect your GitHub account and get started. You can then change the number of image outputs, the number of denoising steps, and the scale of classifier-free guidance. Thousands of people on Twitter entered their own names to see what they would look like as Pokémon because we are all the main characters in our own stories. In case you're wondering, I'm a red-haired spider with only three legs. When you enter the names of celebrities, however, you get some truly cursed images.  Pokémon What's even creepier is when you enter actual Pokémon names and get an alternate universe version of characters you've loved since childhood. The text to Pokémon generator is entertaining to play with, but don't worry — The Pokémon Company will continue to surprise and awe us with increasingly bizarre (and often delightful!) new creatures. This morning, Pokémon fans received their next tidbit of information before the long-awaited Pokémon Scarlet & Violet games arrive in November: Wiglett, a beach-dwelling variation on Diglett. It's similar to Digletts' long Furby. We're in good hands, Pokémon fans.
