A David Hockney painting of the sun rising over the Mediterranean sold at auction for nearly £21 million, nearly three times its low estimate.
Early Morning, Sainte-Maxime, the British artist, has been possessed by a private individual for more than 30 years. Christie's, the auction house, reported that it sold in six minutes of the auction between prospective buyers for an estimated £7 million to £10 million.
It's a long way from breaking the record for a Hockney painting. In 2018, Hockney's Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90 million (£70 million at the time), making him the most valuable living artist.
Early Morning, Sainte-Maxime was inspired by a photograph taken by Hockney while staying at the home of film director Tony Richardson. The port of Sainte-Maxime could be seen across the bay from Richardson's house in the hills above Saint-Tropez.
