The Story Behind the Iran Protests
On September 13, morality police officials arrested a 22-year-old Kurdish lady, Mahsa Amini, from the city of Saqez when she was in Tehran for violating the strict law that requires women to cover their hair with a hijab or headscarf. Ms. Amini collapsed after the officials brought her to a correctional facility to be "educated." After spending three days in a coma in the hospital, she died. According to the police, her cause of death was abrupt heart failure. But her family disagreed with this, claiming that the police beat her to death.Details of the protests
Ms. Amini's death sparked immediate demonstrations against the morality police and the hijab law, swiftly becoming the most significant threat Iran's Shia Muslim religious establishment has faced in years. Moreover, since Mahsa Amini's burial on September 17, the anti-government protests have extended to over 80 Iranian cities and towns. As per social media videos, the protests involved women cutting their hair in public and burning their headscarves on bonfires. In addition, applause and chants such as "Women, life, freedom" and "Death to the dictator" (a reference to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) accompanied the demonstrations. On Monday, Iran Human Rights reported that 76 protestors have died across 14 provinces, including six women and four children. However, the organization warned that internet censorship was delaying the reporting of the deaths. In addition, IHR claimed that footage and death certificates it collected proved that despite Iranian officials' denials, security forces were firing live ammunition directly at protestors. Plus, Iranian authorities revealed detaining more than 1,200 people. Most importantly, officials also arrested Faezeh Hashemi, the daughter of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Tuesday, according to Iranian media. She is a vocal opponent of the Iranian establishment. On another note, the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) demanded the release of at least 20 journalists, bloggers, human rights advocates, attorneys, and civil society activists who had been detained. The committee also urged the Iranian security forces to stop using oppressive tactics against the journalists covering this important subject and to reestablish internet connectivity, which is essential for keeping the public informed. Meanwhile, President Ebrahim Raisi spoke of the need to "take decisive action against opponents of the security and peace of the country."Tonight in the city of Yazd, two women standing on top of a car throw their hijabs in the air while protesters cheer and clap, on the 11th night of unrest in Iran over the death of #MahsaAmini, 22, in morality police custody and a near total internet shutdown.#مهسا_امینی pic.twitter.com/aqaxLhtX4C
