Dimensity 8200 from MediaTek brings premium performance to cheaper phones

A new sub-flagship mobile CPU from MediaTek is being added to the lineup, and it offers a few "core" improvements. Say hello to the Dimensity 8200, the system on chip (SoC) that will soon be found inside a number of smartphones produced by Chinese companies. It replaces the Dimensity 8100. It will compete with processors like Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. By choosing to use TSMC's 4nm technology, MediaTek's most recent product enters directly into the flagship category. Apple also used the same 4nm technology to manufacture the potent A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro. In contrast, the MediaTek 8100 is built using TSMC's 5nm manufacturing process. The basic architecture has also undergone significant changes. A dual-cluster architecture with four Cortex-A78 cores and an equal number of Cortex-A55 cores was available in the Dimensity 8100. Similar to Qualcomm's flagship products and the top-tier Dimensity 9200 mobile CPU, the Dimensity 8200 adopts a tri-cluster architecture. [caption id="attachment_69854" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Dimensity 8200 MediaTek[/caption] Along with three slightly slower Cortex-A78 cores operating at 3.0GHz, you get one Cortex-A78 core humming at 3.1GHz. There are four Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0GHz for simpler workloads. The GPU is unaltered, but MediaTek is giving the ARM Mali-G610 graphics engine a little bit more power by combining it with the most recent HyperEngine 6.0 optimization tools. The Dimensity 8200 has also been outfitted by MediaTek with the brand-new Imagiq 785 chip to manage its camera features, enabling 4K HDR video capture. The Imagiq 780 ISP's successor can capture images with up to 320 million pixels, whereas the previous model could only support 200-megapixel images. In order to produce better detailed photographs, the company is also claiming "exceptionally quick AI-noise reduction." The 180Hz refresh rate that MediaTek's new hardware can support for Full HD+ displays is a small improvement over the 168Hz claims made by the Dimensity 8100. The program includes 4K AV1 video decoding support as well. The first smartphones with Dimensity 8200 processors will be available in December, although it is unlikely that any of them would be sold in the United States. OnePlus and Motorola are the only options. Both OnePlus and Motorola have begun to embrace the use of MediaTek processors in their line of inexpensive Nord smartphones.
