Doreen Bogdan-Martin is the first woman elected as the International Telecommunication Union's secretary-general (ITU). The UN's primary technical body is the ITU. The ITU, which was initially established in 1865 to oversee the first global telegraph networks, currently plays a significant part in promoting the use of radio, satellite, and the internet.
By 139 votes to 25, Ms. Bogdan-Martin defeated Rashid Ismailov of Russia.
When her tenure officially starts on January 1, 2023, the American will replace Houlin Zhao, who has held the position since 2014.
Sturdy and solid base - Doreen Bogdan-Martin will assume control of the oldest UN organization, which oversees several elements of global communications. These include coordinating technological standards, assigning satellite orbits globally, and enhancing infrastructure in underdeveloped nations.
Because Ms. Bogdan's opponent, Martin, had previously called for worldwide internet regulation, there were worries before the election.
After winning, Doreen Bogdan-Martin remarked, "We need to provide them with a strong and secure basis for growth, whether for today's kids or our kids' kids."
Global issues include growing conflicts, climate crises, food security, gender inequality, and 2.7 billion people's lack of internet access. She stated that she thought the ITU had a chance to assist with many of these problems.
