Earth View takes Our Breath in Spacewalk Video by NASA

The first spacewalk by NASA since March was successful. After a successful extravehicular activity (EVA) lasting 7 hours and 11 minutes, American astronauts Frank Rubio and Josh Cassada returned to the interior of the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday in the late afternoon. Just over six weeks after the duo's arrival at the orbiting station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of SpaceX's Crew-5 mission, Rubio and Cassada completed their first spacewalks. A mounting bracket was installed on the starboard side of the station's truss assembly in advance of the installation of two ISS Rollout Solar Arrays as part of ongoing efforts to increase the facility's power source, which made up the majority of the EVA's primary goals. Since the ISS began operating a little more than 20 years ago, Tuesday's EVA marked the 254th spacewalk in support of space station assembly, modifications, and maintenance tasks.

Pause in spacewalk

After an EVA mishap in which German astronaut Matthias Maurer's helmet began to develop moisture inside, NASA terminated its spacewalk program eight months ago. Despite the fact that Maurer was unharmed, NASA called it a "near call" and chose to halt ISS spacewalks while it looked into what went wrong. Engineers reevaluated the procedures for next EVAs and changed the suit's construction to make sure that any extra moisture that develops during a spacewalk is efficiently absorbed. Not all spacewalks at the ISS were canceled as a result of NASA's suspension of operations. Since March, Roscosmos, NASA's Russian counterpart, has planned five spacewalks with primarily Russian crew members. Tuesday, November 29, and Saturday, December 3, are the dates set for the following two NASA-led spacewalks.
