This is because a federal judge rejected Ed Sheeran's attempt to have the 2018 lawsuit dismissed. As a result, the copyright action from "Thinking Out Loud-owners" is requesting $100 million in damages. The British singer-songwriter's team has refuted the lawsuit, arguing that the stolen material is "commonplace" and does not give rise to a copyright infringement claim. Ed Sheeran will testify before a federal Manhattan jury as Judge Louis Stanton ordered. But, according to him, there is no "bright-line rule" governing the legal conflict. According to the lawsuit, Sheeran copied Gaye's song's harmonic rhythms and chord progressions. Billboard first reported that Ed Sheeran will be facing a jury over Marvin Gaye copyright claims It was alleged in the original complaint that Sheeran had copied a chord progression and the harmonic beat from Gaye's song. Sheeran and his accusers now accept Sheeran, albeit they maintain that the song's parts belong to Gaye and are therefore protected by copyright laws. Ed Sheeran previously took part in several other lawsuits with a similar theme. Suits involving "Photograph," ultimately resolved out of court, were among them. Another lawsuit against Ed Sheeran was "The Rest of Our Life." Another significant legal battle between Gaye's heirs and Robin, Pharrell, and others involving "Blurred Lines" resulted in damages of $5.3 million. Structured Asset Sales triggered this action. They own a third of the song shares through Ed Townsend for "Let's Get It On."
