Elon Expresses Concerns Over Spotify & App Store Guidelines, Another Battle?

Elon Musk hasn't completed his purchase of Twitter yet, but he appears to be preparing for another battle. Musk expressed his concerns about Apple's business practices, specifically those surrounding Spotify and app store guidelines, in a pair of late-night Tweets posted just four minutes apart. The first was a response to Spotify founder Daniel Ek's tweet, which highlighted a New York Times story about Apple's three rejections of Spotify's new app as the streaming service expands its offering to include audiobooks. According to Apple, the new app violates its guidelines for how developers communicate with customers about online purchases. Spotify Ek used the story to criticize the policies, saying, "I can't be the only one who sees the absurdity." Musk appeared to agree, responding with "Concerning." Moments later, he agreed with venture capitalist Bill Lee's criticism of Apple's 30% in-app purchase fee, saying "30% is a lot." Of course, criticisms of Apple and its app store policies are nothing new. Spotify previously clashed with Apple when it began offering podcasts. And, last year, Epic Games sued Apple over the policies, resulting in a split decision in which the judge upheld the app store's structure as legal. App Store Musk, on the other hand, enjoys a good brawl, and this isn't the first time he's poked Apple. He tweeted in May, "Apple's store is like a 30% tax on the internet." "Definitely not okay," he says, adding, "literally ten times higher than it should be." And, during a Tesla earnings call in July 2021, he discussed plans to allow competitors to use the company's electric vehicle charging network, saying: "We would like to emphasize that our goal is to aid in the development of sustainable energy. It is not to build a walled garden and use it to suffocate our competitors, as some companies do." He then pretended to cough and said, "Apple."
