Elon Musk Claims That Twitter Will Have a “Content Moderation Council”

Elon Musk, Twitter's new owner, claims that a council would be established to make crucial moderation decisions for the business.  The "council" would contain "widely different opinions," according to Musk, who also stated in a tweet on Friday that "no major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes."  A few hours later, as he speedruns the process of becoming a media executive, he amended his comments with a quote tweet, saying, "To be absolutely clear, we have not yet made any modifications to Twitter's content moderation policy." Making Twitter a "free speech" platform was part of Musk's stated justification for purchasing it, and he's indicated that he'd be open to inviting controversial personalities like former president Donald Trump back into the site.  With Friday's announcement, it appears that he is giving a council the authority to make that kind of decision.  The tweet doesn't specify what kind of perspectives Musk wants the council to represent, how many members it will have, how they will be chosen, or how it will differ from the company's existing content moderation and policy teams. content moderation council” But Musk has made it clear that he disagrees with the way the platform's current moderation mechanisms function.  After taking over the business, he fired numerous executives, including policy leader Vijaya Gadde, whose actions he had publicly condemned prior to his acquisition of the firm. Other social media firms have made what appears to be the same attempt; for example, Meta has an oversight board that is intended to be an impartial body that makes judgments about Facebook's platform and moderation.  However, opponents have questioned how much authority the board really possesses to uphold its decisions.  Regardless of the "free speech" ideals that tech companies are trying to uphold, there is a web of prospective legislation that might limit the types of moderation judgments that Twitter and other platforms can make.
