Elon Musk Described By Potential Jurors As "Talented But Crazy"

In a federal courthouse in San Francisco, jury selection in a class action case brought against Tesla CEO Elon Musk got underway today. Unsurprisingly, prospective jurors were aware of Musk's identity and some had strong opinions about him. Musk was referred to as "brilliant but crazy" by one woman in a questionnaire given to possible jurors. Musk was characterized as conceited, narcissistic, unpredictable, and unreasonable by other prospective jurors. Musk has a mercenary personality, according to one. "I'll attempt to be impartial"

Like many others, the person who described Musk as "brilliant but crazy" responded to questions from the judge and the lawyers for both parties regarding her opinions on Musk. She asserted that "social media is not the medium to manage" business-related responsibilities and that she "would expect someone more professional" to hold the position of CEO of a significant corporation. Chen asked the woman if she could be fair given her views on Musk's use of social media given that the lawsuit is about Musk's tweets. She added, "I can try to be impartial." She retracted her claims after Musk's attorney questioned her, saying, "I'm probably biased in some way. If I'm chosen and have to do this, all I can do is reevaluate, consider the available data, and make an effort to be impartial." The man claimed that since Musk acquired Twitter, his opinions of Musk have deteriorated. He stated, "Before that, he just seemed like another haughty rich guy." Despite this, the man asserted that his personal beliefs wouldn't stop him from being impartial.

"Somewhat haughty and narcissistic"

Musk was chastised for insisting on keeping Tesla facilities open despite local shelter-in-place orders during the early stages of the pandemic by a lady who labeled him conceited, unpredictable, and irrational. One lady who described Musk in interviews as coming off as "a little haughty and selfish" claimed she would make a fair juror. In answer to a query from Chen, she responded, "A lot of individuals aren't necessarily likeable people, but it doesn't mean you should judge them on that. She responded when Musk's attorney questioned whether her opinions would consciously or unconsciously influence her during the trial: "I genuinely believe you can't judge a person unless you've walked a mile in their shoes." Musk has a "mercenary personality," according to a man, but that trait may have positive effects. "He appears to have a powerful personality and follows his desires... I'm just using that [expression] to say that he's willing to take a chance, chances, and possibly do things that other people might not have the guts to do."

"I don't believe I'm the best person for this case,"

Finding jurors who won't pre-judge the case based on the fact that the judge had already found Musk's tweets were fake was one issue for Musk's side. "Musk's tweets were wrong, you'll be informed. You will be required to determine whether they were significant to a reasonable investor in the purchase and sale of a security in the circumstances in which they were made "Attorney for Musk told the jury. Potential jurors were constantly urged by Musk's attorney to consider if this was the proper case for them. One man said, "I don't think I'm necessarily the best person for this situation." I am quite opinionated. Chen "agreed that eight prospective jurors who had expressed extreme misgivings or enthusiasm about Musk in pretrial questionnaires would be questioned in private to reduce the chances of affecting the opinions of other people in the courtroom" after Musk attorney Alex Spiro expressed "grave concerns about sitting a fair and impartial jury."
