Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, unveiled a model of the "Optimus" robot. This humanoid robot utilizes some of the same sensors and AI algorithms as the Autopilot driving assistance system in Tesla vehicles. While acknowledging that they had "a guy in a suit" last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised something much more fantastic today at the start of the company's 2022 AI Day event. Musk claims that although this prototype is capable of more than what was demonstrated in person, this performance marked the first time it was untethered. In a Q&A session, Musk explained that Tesla is skilled at developing the AI and the actuators required for robotics based on the experience of producing drive units for electric cars. Musk predicted it could reach a price of "probably less than $20,000" and later stated that it could cost as little as $18,000. Elon Musk Optimus robot Musk claimed that would enable it to begin producing capable robots and test them in its facilities. He asserted that Tesla's Optimus is made for mass production in the "millions" of units and to be very capable, setting it apart from other "quite amazing humanoid robot displays." Behind him, a group of employees was moving a non-walking prototype as he finished his sentence.  The stage's back doors first opened to reveal a deconstructed Optimus, dubbed "Bumble C" by Tesla, who stepped forward and performed the "raise the roof" dance routine. Musk said they didn't want it to be risky, make too many moves on stage or "fall flat on its face." The business then played back a few videos of the robot performing other duties, like picking up boxes. It was placed on a platform and waved to the crowd to demonstrate the wrist and hand's range of motion. Musk stated that this device still has actuators, a battery pack, and everything else but "wasn't quite ready to walk" when a team of workers eventually rolled off it. Future uses might involve cooking, gardening, or even "cat girl" sex partners, according to Elon Musk, who stated that production might begin as early as next year.
