Embracing or Fearing ChatGPT: The Dilemma for Companies and Education

Recently, the tech industry has been grappling with the rise of ChatGPT, the AI language model created by OpenAI. The capabilities of this technology have been raising questions and concerns about its impact on various fields, including the software development industry. Amazon is the latest company to be feeling the heat from this AI technology, as internal communications indicate that an Amazon lawyer has requested employees not to share any code or confidential information with ChatGPT. According to Insider, the lawyer sent out a message on Slack reminding employees not to share “any Amazon confidential information (including Amazon code you are working on)” with ChatGPT. This comes after instances where the AI chatbot was seen to mimic internal Amazon data in its responses. The lawyer stated in the message that the inputs employees provide to ChatGPT may be used as training data and could result in the AI’s output resembling Amazon’s confidential information. This warning from Amazon is not without merit. Slack channel transcripts reviewed by Insider showed that ChatGPT was able to provide correct answers to software coding questions in an interview scenario and even made improvements to some of Amazon’s code. This demonstration of ChatGPT's abilities left employees both scared and excited about the impact it could have on the way software coding interviews are conducted. Amazon ChatGPT has been making waves in various fields since its rise in popularity, and its role in the education sector is one of the most debated topics. Although the AI language model was able to pass a final exam at Wharton in an MBA level course (where it struggled with basic arithmetic), the role of this technology in education is still under scrutiny. The New York City Department of Education has even gone as far as to ban the use of this technology over fears of cheating. However, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, believes that these concerns are overstated and that school administrators simply need to get over it. Altman argues that the advancements in AI technology like ChatGPT should be embraced and not feared, as they have the potential to revolutionize the way we approach education and other fields. In conclusion, while the capabilities of ChatGPT are certainly impressive, it is essential that companies like Amazon take the necessary precautions to protect their confidential information and intellectual property. The AI language model has the potential to disrupt industries and transform the way we approach various fields, and it is important that its use is monitored and regulated to ensure that it is used for the betterment of society and not to the detriment of individuals and companies.
