After being hacked and sending "obscene and racist" notifications to Apple users via the iPhone manufacturer's Apple News service, U.S. business and media newspaper Fast Company announced that it has shut down its website on Tuesday evening. Around 8:18 p.m. Eastern time, the account of business news publication Fast Company sent out a push alert with the offensive message and the addition that "Thrax was here." The identity of Thrax and the number of Apple customers who received the notice were unknown, but it seemed to be widely distributed. An identical message and a statement from the hackers describing how they gained access to the website's publishing capabilities could be seen on the Fast Company website. As a precaution, the messages were removed from the page, and Fast Company completely shut down its website. As of midnight Eastern, users could only access a "404 Not Found" error page. “Fast Company’s Apple News account was hacked on Tuesday evening,” the company said in a tweet. “Two obscene and racist push notifications were sent about a minute apart. The messages are vile and not in line with the content and ethos of Fast Company. We are investigating the situation and have suspended the feed & shutdown until we are certain the situation has been resolved.” "To clarify: Fast Company’s content management system (CMS) was hacked on Tuesday evening, which impacted our Apple News alerts," Fast Company later added. In order to offer push alerts to Apple consumers who subscribe to the news publisher's channel, news publishers utilising the Apple News aggregation app can connect their digital publishing tools to Apple News. According to Fast Company, hackers compromised those publishing tools. Fast Company's channel had been shut down, according to a tweet from Apple News.
