Finally!!! We Know What is Healthy Food

Like many other things, the term “healthy food” is also evolving and includes and excludes things that were once supposed to be bad for health and vice versa. The FDA has been trying to understand the meaning of healthy food for years, and now they seem to have found a rough definition. They have taken inputs from corporate and private institutions. For example, FDA sent a notice to KIND, a company that produces energy bars that comprise nuts that are put together using sugar syrup. The FDA stated that nuts are too fatty to be put in the healthy category, and the company should not use the word “healthy.” KIND retorted that nuts are healthy and the FDA is wrong in this case. For this, the FDA replied, “Oh. Perhaps you’re right. We’ll think about that.” fOOD Until recently, healthy food meant being low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol, but USDA guidelines modified the existing dietary food. In 2015, the cholesterol limitation was removed, and in 2020, the sugar limit was added. The new definition of healthy is in line with the latest specifications. FRUITS AND NUTS The new proposition from the agency for the companies to claim their product is healthy is listed below:
  • It should contain a meaningful amount of food from at least one of the food groups or subgroups, like fruits, vegetables, dairy, etc., recommended by the Dietary Guidelines.
  • Stick to certain nutrients, such as saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. The limit threshold is based on a percent of the Daily Value for the nutrient and varies depending on the food and food group. The limit for sodium is 10% of the DV per serving, 230 mg per serving.
  • Cereal has to consist of ¾th of whole grains with a single gram of saturated fat, 230 mg of sodium, and 2.5 gm of sugar.
Dairy product yogurt can be marked healthy, provided it does not contain too much sugar. Trail mix is beneficial but should not contain sugar, salt, and saturated fats at more than acceptable levels. FDA specifies more examples. The new rules are made to fit the eating patterns that are healthy and unhealthy, and the plan is to stop extolling a particular ingredient and make another look like a villain. Instead, the new markers say this product comes into a healthy diet. HEALTHY FOOD The agency allowing labeling each ingredient as healthy is itself contradicting and is also planning on symbols for healthy food. However, the move may be helpful to health-conscious people or may not, but it is a good thing that something has begun.
