According to a report by The War Zone on Thursday, Sept. 27, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made history this week by sending the first ALTIUS-600 drone to fly into a storm. The drone was launched by the NOAA WP-3D Orion, better known as Kermit. Many passengers had severe motion sickness due to the flight's strong turbulence. According to NOAA Hurricane Hunter Nick Underwood, the encounter was his "roughest flight." The crew was "slammed very hard," according to Joe Cione, Lead Meteorologist for New Technologies at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory, who spoke to The War Zone. The two AREA-I employees on board the ALTIUS-600 aircraft, Nick Liccini, and Patrick Sosa were "true heroes" because they both felt ill during the journey but managed to complete their duties. First ALTIUS-600 drone launched by NOAA into Hurricane Ian's eye In order to obtain the data needed to track Hurricane Ian, Liccini and Sosa faced the difficult challenge of aiming the ALTIUS-600 drone right into the storm's eye. "The drone was successfully launched, and we watched over it for a while, orienting itself. And we accomplished all of it while experiencing only moderately intense turbulence, "In a statement, Cione said. The ALTIUS-600 continued to fly for another two hours after launch, providing crucial data that Kermit could not deliver. Fortunately, at a distance of 125 nautical miles, Kermit's crew and passengers could still communicate with the drone.
