First British Rocket Flight By Virgin Orbit Fails

Virgin Orbit's attempt to launch an orbital rocket from Western Europe and become the first spaceflight business to do so was unsuccessful. Cosmic Girl, a modified Boeing 747 plane operated by Virgin Orbit and described as a game-changing mission for the United Kingdom's space industry, launched late on Monday night local time from Spaceport Cornwall, 215 miles to the west of London (late afternoon ET). Cosmic Girl deployed the Launcher One rocket carrying nine tiny satellites for various commercial customers once it had risen to 30,000 feet. Virgin Orbit said that everything went according to plan in a tweet by confirming a "clean separation from Cosmic Girl and successful ignition of LauncherOne's first stage rocket engine, NewtonThree." The crew announced "successful stage separation and ignition of LauncherOne's second stage engine, NewtonFour" a short while afterwards. The following communication stated that the payload would be released once the rocket had coasted halfway around the planet, however Virgin Orbit immediately made it known that the mission had not gone as expected. It stated, "We seem to have an abnormality that has prevented us from entering orbit." "We are assessing the data." In contrast to companies like SpaceX and Rocket Lab, Virgin Orbit's launch technology places rockets beneath the wing of a modified jumbo jet that can take off from a standard airfield. This provides it more freedom in terms of the locations from which it may launch missions, making access to space easier for businesses and organizations all across the world. The first of these missions happened in January 2021, while the last one was in July 2022. Virgin Orbit suffered a significant setback by failing to complete its first successful trip from British land, especially as it was transporting equipment for paying customers. Although it's too soon to pinpoint exactly what went wrong, the incident seriously calls into question Virgin Orbit's capacity to launch its upcoming mission, a fly for the U.S. Air Force later this month from its California base.
