For Edge users, cryptocurrency wallets may be available soon.

The feature, which the screenshots indicate is only for internal testing, was discovered by Twitter user @thebookisclosed, who has a history of locating current but-disabled features in everything from fresh Windows 11 builds to old Windows Vista betas. Since Edge was resurrected as a Chromium-based browser a few years ago, Microsoft has added several money and shopping-related features. After integrating a "buy now, pay later" short-term financing feature into Edge in late 2021, the business encountered criticism. The crypto wallet can manage various types of cryptocurrencies, and it is "embedded in Edge, making it easy to use without installing any extension," according to the screenshots. Transactions and changes in the value of each of your individual currencies will also be recorded. While the "assets" tab will allow you to adoringly gaze at your NFTs, the "explore" tab offers news articles about cryptocurrencies. The wallet is "non-custodial" (also known as "self-custodial"), which means that you are solely in charge of and accountable for the passwords and recovery keys that grant access to your money. If you forget your credentials, Microsoft will not be able to let you back in. MS Crypto Image Credit: Cryptoslate It depends on your point of view whether you find these add-ons to be helpful, annoying, or predatory. It might be useful to have a "trustworthy" built-in option that doesn't call for the installation of dubious third-party extensions given the prevalence of cryptocurrency scams. The feature may also persuade users who are only passingly interested in cryptocurrency to start investigating it, despite the fact that it is once again full of scams. Many of these features can be disabled, and rival browsers like Chrome and Firefox all try to increase value and make money by integrating access to new specialized features and third-party services. But given that Edge is a pre-installed, non-removable component of every Windows 10 and Windows 11 PC and that the operating system frequently encourages you to switch to Edge, Microsoft's actions can still have a sizable impact that warrants additional scrutiny. After you enter Edge, the browser encourages you to use Bing and other Microsoft services. Because Microsoft frequently tests features in Edge, Windows, and its other software that are never included in the general-release versions, the crypto wallet may not be provided to Edge users.
