An urgent investigation is warranted as an unconfirmed report states that former UK PM Liz Truss’s phone was hacked by Russian spies when she was the foreign minister.
According to the report published in the UK's Mail, anonymous people revealed that the minister’s cell phone was accessed by agents working for the Kremlin. They have a year full of access to messages which included discussion of highly sensitive topics like the Ukrainian war and arms shipments.
The intrusion was recognized last summer during the Conservative Party’s campaign but was hidden by the then country’s PM Boris Johnson and Cabinet Secretary Simon Case. The UK government declined to comment on this issue. UK politicians are demanding a probe into the matter.
The Labor Party's home secretary Yvette Cooper stated, "There are immensely important national security issues raised by an attack like this by a hostile state which will have been taken extremely seriously by our intelligence and security agencies,"
"There are also serious security questions around why and how this information has been leaked or released right now which must also be urgently investigated."
Layla Moran, foreign affairs spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats party states, "We need an urgent independent investigation to uncover the truth,"
"If it turns out this information was withheld from the public to protect Liz Truss' leadership bid, that would be unforgivable."
In 2018, Getty Images published two photos of Truss using the Samsung Galaxy Note8 which did not have security updates till 2021, so the phone was run on Android 9 OS. The security lapse may have made it vulnerable to hacking the minister's phone.
However, it is unclear as to what phone Truss was using during the period when her phone was hacked. It is a matter of concern that a UK minister used a Galaxy 8 model when discussing the country’s important and confidential topics.
The Russian spies would have broken into the phone either way, however, a phone with more security features would require the hacker more tools to break in.
The UK government has not stated if they will be taking any action in the Kremlin data breach.
