After bringing a wrongful death lawsuit against Brian Laundrie's parents, who they claim killed their son's 22-year-old fiancée during a cross-country road trip in August 2021, Gabby Petito's family was awarded $3 million by a Florida judge. The agreement was made public on Thursday, November 18, months after Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, who live in the same Florida county as Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, filed a civil lawsuit. The Laundries allegedly hindered efforts to find Petito and knew that she "had been murdered by their son," who eventually committed suicide. "In addition to losing their daughter, the Petito family was prevented from confronting her perpetrator. The Petito family cannot be made whole financially for the loss of their daughter Gabby at the hands of Brian Laundrie "According to NBC, Patrick Reilly, a lawyer for Petito's family, said that. Gabby and Brian traveled across the country in a van, posting their travelogues online. However, it was later revealed that the couple apparently fought frequently, with police in Moab, Utah once being called to an allegation of a "domestic disturbance" between them. In September 2021, when Gabby was reported missing, Brian visited his parents by himself. Petito's parents filed a lawsuit against the Laundrie family for neglecting to take action and reveal Gabby's whereabouts. Brain and his parents disregarded Gabby's family's requests for information for days. After leaving the house, he went to a nearby marsh and spent several days hiding there before killing himself. The Laundrie family was being sued by Gabby's parents for wrongful death and malicious prosecution, and the matter was set to go to trial in December. In a case that is still pending, they also sued Christopher and Roberta Laundrie individually. In the May lawsuit, they alleged that not only did Christopher and Roberta Laundrie know that Brian had killed Gabby, but they also intended to aid in his flight from the country. They have come to an understanding, which concludes the case. However, according to some reports, Laundrie's estate is only worth about $20,000. According to Yahoo News, Petito's family intends to contribute any money received to the Gabby Petito Foundation they established.
