Gabrielle Union brought back painful but cathartic memories of her own sexual assault. The actress discussed how she connected with the
Truth Be Told season 3 plot and how she dealt with her own trauma in the process at a Television Critics Association discussion for the AppleTV+ program on Wednesday.
Union, 50, plays a character in the show who tries to keep the media informed about a list of missing Black females who might have fallen victim to human trafficking. She stated, "I have the lived experience of being a Black teen experiencing sexual violence in the Bay Area."

Additionally, Union admitted that she had spoken up about her personal experiences and used her life story to serve as an advocate. Even still, relating to the plot felt different from sharing her own personal experiences.
"I've been talking about my rape publicly for 25 years. But that's [a] first-person account," Union remarked. "But to fictionalize it, and to figure out a way into the character using my experience, I just didn't know it was going to happen. It's my first time really doing that kind of deep, deep work."

Moreover, even some of the season 3 filming of
Truth Be Told was connected directly and unexpectedly to Union's own assault. Additionally, she tried to cope through filming, but she later admitted that it "did not work." And during the filming, Union eventually unearthed some of her own insights into her assault.
What's more
Gabrielle Union will co-star in
Truth Be Told season 3 with her friend Octavia Spencer, who plays investigative podcaster, Poppy Parnell. Together, the two will pursue justice in a neighborhood that isn't prepared to acknowledge the devastation that has befallen a group of high school girls.

On another note, for Union, it's a problem that affects her personally in the real world. She said, "[We're] talking about the most marginalized of the marginalized that go missing and get brutalized, and no one gives a s---. It's like suspending you in terror. And you're screaming, and no one cares to throw you a lifeline."
Lastly, season 3 of
Truth Be Told debuts this Friday on AppleTV+.
