A Georgia high school student was detained after an attack that was caught on a now-viral video left a longtime teacher with critical leg injuries. According to a public information officer with the Rockland County Sheriff's Office, the student, who isn't being named because of her age, has been charged with aggravated battery in connection with the Jan. 26 incident at Heritage High School in Conyers, an Atlanta suburb.

Details about the incident

The roughly one-minute-long video begins with the student cursing at the teacher before shutting the door in her face. And as of February 2, it had more than 12.7 million views on Twitter. Furthermore, the argument moves into the hallway, where the English Language Arts teacher, later identified as Tiwana Turner on a GoFundMe, lifts her arms to stop the student who starts to get physical. However, the student soon hits her in the face. Additionally, a second video of the violent incident shows the student dragging Turner to the ground by her hair and punching her while numerous onlookers try to intervene. Turner has been hospitalized since the incident and is still unable to walk, according to a GoFundMe page created by her friend Jean Cannon. In addition, according to Cannon, Turner "attempted to redirect the off-task behavior of one of the students, and the student proceeded to physically attack her." Moreover, she hopes that the initiative, which as of February 2 had garnered more than $11,000, will lessen the financial strain associated with hospital bills. Cannon said, "While she has helped so many students and families during her 27 years in education, she is now in need of help and assistance."

Additional details

In a statement obtained by Fox 5 Atlanta, a representative for Rockdale County Public Schools stated that the district "does not tolerate student violence towards any staff members." It added, "Students who harm other students or staff will be disciplined according to our Student Discipline Code of Conduct and will be appropriately charged by law enforcement." On another note, according to the sheriff's office, the pupil was taken that day into the Department of Juvenile Justice's custody. However, authorities were unable to confirm right away whether the suspected Georgia high school student had been freed on bond.
