One day after Elon Musk completed a $44 billion takeover of the social media network, General Motors has temporarily halted paid advertising on Twitter. Additionally, the decision by GM was first reported by CNBC. The company told sources via email "We are engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership. As is normal course of business with a significant change in a media platform, we have temporarily paused our paid advertising. Our customer care interactions on Twitter will continue.” However, what portion of GM's overall advertising budget is allocated to Twitter is unknown. Furthermore, a few of the well-known automakers with social media presences on the platform are Ford, GM, Stellantis, Porsche, VW, and Volvo, as well as more recent businesses like Rivian. And even though Henrik Fisker, the company's CEO, canceled his personal account in April after the announcement of the Musk-Twitter partnership, Fisker is still active on Twitter. Moreover, earlier this week, Musk made an attempt to allay the worries of advertisers by posting a message about his anticipated management style for the social media site on his own Twitter account. “There has been much speculation about why I bought Twitter and what I think about advertising,” Musk said. “Most of it has been wrong.” He continued that he believes Twitter has the potential to be a “common digital town square,” and that the platform cannot be “a free-for-all hellscape.” However, for GM to compete with Tesla and possibly even outsell it in the sale of electric vehicles, Musk's promises might not be sufficient.
