All Android users can expect a change for Gmail that will update the Gmail notification icons for “Chat” and “Spaces” that were indistinguishable from each other. Earlier, the notification icon for Google “Chat” and “Spaces” was the same, making it difficult for users to determine whether they received a message from a single co-worker or group chat.
Last year, Google rebranded their old chat “Rooms” into “Spaces” to tackle other business messaging competitors like Slack and Microsoft Teams. First spotted by 9to5Google, Gmail notifications for Android is currently rolling out separate icons for both Chat and Spaces notifications.
As Google Chat will soon replace Hangouts for Google Workspace users, Google added new status bar icons to differentiate between Google Chat and Spaces notifications. The double-filled-in message bubble that displayed notifications for both apps now shows a single hollow-out message bubble for “Chat.” While the “Spaces” icon depicts three avatars. In addition, Google opted to replace its “Hangouts” application with a full-featured “Google Chat.”
However, this update is still rolling out to Android users and is not yet widely available. So make sure to keep an eye out for any updates on this site.
