GM’s $30,000 electric SUV will be one of the cheapest EVs available

Image Source: Genthe General Motors unveiled a new electric SUV on Thursday, claiming it will be the cheapest small electric SUV on the market when it goes on sale in roughly a year. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will have a starting price of around $30,000, making it one of the most affordable electric vehicles available. According to Edmunds.com, the typical electric vehicle available today has a starting sticker price of around $47,500. The $30,000 price tag for the Equinox EV would, of course, be for the base model with no extra amenities. The price excludes tax credits, but GM isn't now qualified for any electric car tax credits, and it's unclear whether any GM vehicles would be eligible under future rules. Several variants in the low- to mid-$30,000 price range are also available. Chevrolet's own Bolt EV and the SUV-like Bolt EUV are among them. Despite the moniker, the Equinox EV has virtually little in common with the gasoline-powered compact SUV that is Chevrolet's second-best-selling vehicle behind the Silverado truck. GM used the same strategy when unveiling the Chevy Silverado EV truck and the Chevrolet Blazer EV SUV earlier this year. They share only their names and their basic size and form with gas models.  These three, as well as General Motors' GMC Hummer EV truck and Cadillac's Lyriq SUV, are based on the same electric vehicle battery pack architecture and construction. The Equinox EV is over three inches bigger and somewhat shorter than the petrol variant, measuring from the roof to the ground. It lacks a front boot, unlike some other electric vehicles. Instead, the region beneath the bonnet houses electronics and the front electric motor. According to Scott Bell, GM (GMvice )'s president for Chevy, designers, and engineers opted to avoid the expense and complexity of trying to construct a room under the bonnet and instead focus vehicle development time and money on producing a better experience within the cabin. The cheapest version will be the so-called Blazer 1LT with a single 210 horsepower engine powering only the front wheels. It will have a total driving range on a full charge of about 250 miles.
