Many doctors write prescriptions in haste, making it nearly impossible for their patients to understand what they wrote. This issue has existed for decades, and many tech companies have attempted to solve it with little to no success.
Google is now attempting to translate those incomprehensible texts. The search engine giant announced Monday at its annual conference in India that it is collaborating with pharmacists to investigate ways to decipher doctor handwriting.
The feature, which is currently in research and not yet available to the public, allows users to either take a picture of the prescription or upload one from the photo library. After processing the image, the app detects and highlights the medications mentioned in the note, as demonstrated by a Google executive.
“This will act as an assistive technology for digitizing handwritten medical documents by augmenting the humans in the loop such as pharmacists, however no decision will be made solely based on the output provided by this technology,” the company said in a statement.

Google for India is the company's annual event in the South Asian market, where dozens of new developments are showcased. The company also stated that it is working on a single, unified model that will cover more than 100 Indian languages for both speech and text in order to empower the internet journey of the next millions of South Asians.

Google has over 500 million users in India, making it a critical market for the company. However, it has also been one of the most difficult years for Google in the South Asian market, where it has been slapped twice in recent months by India's antitrust regulator.
