Google Now Shows The Original Source Of An Image. See How to Check

Google has unveiled its innovative "About This Image" tool, aiming to provide users with vital background details and context about images in Google Search. This feature, initially introduced at Google's I/O developer conference, is now available globally for English-speaking users. To access it, simply click on the three-dot menu in Search and Google Images results. This tool reveals the image's origins. It includes any available metadata. And also offers valuable context by showcasing how it has been described. This can be done by news and fact-checking sites over time. This information can encompass details like when the image was first indexed by Google Search and whether it was AI-generated. This release is especially timely, given the surge of misinformation surrounding events like the Israel-Hamas conflict, often fueled by images taken out of context. Google's tool empowers users to track down accurate information about shared images on social media.

How To Know Original Source of Image from Google?

While the "About This Image" feature holds promise, it ultimately relies on users actively verifying the image's source. In an era where misleading images can spread quickly on social platforms, it's crucial to take steps to ensure authenticity. Even long-standing viral images, like the infamous "Hurricane Shark," can be misleading. This is because Google labels it as fake despite its popularity in search results. In addition to this, Google is enhancing its Fact Check Explorer tool. This allows users to search for image fact checks by uploading an image or using its URL. While still in beta, the platform is rolling out a new API to assist fact-checkers. Journalists seamlessly integrate Fact Check Explorer into their workflows. Furthermore, Google is experimenting with generative AI to provide more information about online sources through its AI-powered Search Generative Experience. This AI-generated content will fill gaps in information when established sources like Wikipedia or the Google Knowledge Graph lack details about smaller websites. It will be featured in the "About This Result" tool.
