HIGHLIGHTS

    • 3 out of 9 Google products contain recycled plastic
    • It is bringing some recycled plastic to 100 percent of products by 2022
    • Apple has at least 50 percent recycled plastic on some products

Google pledged to include recycled materials in all of its Made By Google products by 2022. The portfolio currently comprises hardware like Pixel phones, Pixelbooks, Google Home speakers, Nest, and accessories like phone cases and charging stands. Google recently declared that it would neutralize carbon emissions from delivering the consumer hardware by coming year and introduce recycled plastic in each of it's products by 2022. Google pledges carbon-neutral shipments by 2020. It added it would "make technology that puts people first and expands access to the benefits of technology." The new commitment step up the competition among tech firms aiming to show costumers and governments that they are controlling the environmental toll from their widening arrays of devices.

In an interview with the Fast Company, Google announced it had begun using recycled plastic in the Chromecast devices and used plastic containers to create the fabric on Google Homes and cases. The move follows Apple's green energy to use recycled materials in it's products, with the company going so far as to make an in-house robot that dismantles the old hardware for parts. This year, Samsung also declared a similar pledge, promising to use sustainable materials in its product packaging.

"Head of Google's devices and services unit said in an interview that the company's transport-related carbon emissions per unit declined 40 percent last year compared to 2017 by relying more on the ships instead of the planes to move speakers, laptops phones, and other devices from plants to customers across the world.

The company will offset continuing emissions by purchasing carbon credits", Anna Meegan said.

Three out of nine Google products for which the company has detailed disclosures online contain recycled plastic, extending from 20 percent to 42 percent in the casings for it's Google Home speakers and Chromecast streaming dongles.

Google's sustainability commitments include:

  • By 2020, 100% of all shipments going to or from customers will be carbon neutral.
  • Starting in 2022, 100% of Made by Google products will include recycled materials with a drive to maximize recycled content wherever possible.
  • And it will make technology that puts people first and expands access to the benefits of technology.

"From 2017 to 2018, our carbon emissions for product shipments decreased by 40%, we have also launched our Power Project, that will bring one million energy and money-saving Nest thermostats to families in need by 2023, and built much of our Nest product portfolio with post-consumer recycled plastic."

In 2017, Apple committed to a "one day" only using recycled and renewable materials and had at least 50% recycled plastic in some parts of several of its products, reused tin in at least 11 products and recycled aluminum in at least two.
